The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon offers runners a predominantly downhill course through the scenic Black Hills, starting in Wyoming and finishing in South Dakota. The first 12 miles feature improved gravel roads winding through mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, with a notable descent of 1,606 feet and a pass by the "Dances with Wolves" film site at mile 9.35. The final 14 miles are on paved roads, descending Spearfish Canyon Highway into Spearfish, with an additional drop of 1,364 feet. This USATF-certified course is ideal for those aiming to qualify for the Boston Marathon, as it is one of only two such courses in Wyoming and South Dakota.
